How does a well works?

The water wells are dug together with the local community. A well can be dug by hand within a couple of days. A drill digs into the soft ground until the tube is totally submerged in the ground. Then from a kind of bamboo pyramid the next tube is drilled into the ground.

Manure is pumped down into the hole to coat the drill, spread the sand and carry away the water. In the meantime, PVC tubes are melted together into a 300 meter tube with a 2 meter long filter.

Once the drill hits sand at 300 meters after a few days of digging, sand in the water indicates that the correct level has been reached to obtain clean arsenic-free water.

Then the crucial moment has arrived: the drills (70-80 pieces of 4 meters long) are removed and the 300 meter long PVC tube is inserted. This must happen within a couple of minutes before the shaft collapses. Then a cement ring is spread around the top and an iron head is mounted on top. The well is then ready.

If everything goes well a party is given in the village. The addition of the name plaque means a lot to the local community because they realize that someone on the other side of the world cares about them.
